If you don't have to take epic low lighting photography, for everything else Bridge cameras are perfect. They are a little bulkier than point and shoot but way less than DSLRs, and are also great for landscape, macro and sports photography.
There are many options available for under 350 pounds, like Nikon, Sony, Samsung, Canon, Fujifilm, etc...0 -

Thanks aranatecharete. I'm hoping to spend time with my chum over the holidays so will put all this good advice to her. It is all very much appreciated.

You may be better taking her to a good photo dealer. She can try various camera and buy one there. May be a little more than online but at least they can offer help and assistance.0
