Economy 7

Options
Thanks to this site years ago I cancelled my Economy 7 rate as I was not using enough to justify it. British Gas accommodated this by just adding my night rate to day rate and charging me just the standard rate. This worked well for years until I decided to switch to First Utility earlier this year, and I was told the meter was not showing up on the database so as far as they were concerned there was no meter at the property. I contacted BG and was told yes there was an error and they would make sure my meter was put onto the database, they informed me when this was done, and I tried to switch again and was told there was no meter at the property, so I gave up the switch. I am trying again with Scottish mutual but their computer is not clever enough to add the night rate and day rate together and just give me one rate.

Does anyone know how much it will cost me to have the meter replaced with a normal standard meter, the meter was changed about two years ago and I informed the meter company, I would like it changed from Economy to Standard, but on returning from work found they had fitted an Economy One. I have also found out that with economy 7 BG will not allow you to go to a smart meter, when showing my interest on their site.

Supplier policies on meter replacement are all different. Some charge, around £60, but others will do it for no charge. If you ask for a smart meter it will be installed free, but there is a waiting list.

Generally, if you change supplier on your current tariff (i.e. E7) you can then ask your new supplier to change your meter and tariff. They should give you the tariff that was available on the date you joined them.
  • Just inquired of Npower about swapping my Economy 7 meter for a standard one as I was only burning 20% at night. They too said they would simply add the two readings and charge standard rate. I now intend to switch to Co-op - be interested to see what happens.
