Enterprise car rental

Hello, I've rented a car over the Christmas period for me and my girlfriend to visit my parents. I've just checked the reservation though and it says the driver age is 30 and up, I'm 28. Do you think this will be a problem?

I clicked change the reservation and the cost of the rental goes up by nearly 4 times, there's also the option of adding a secondary drive which is 10 quid a day but it doesn't say whether this is also subject to age restrictions.

What do you think I should do? I definitely wouldn't have optionally selected that and 30 and up is the default option, I spent a lot of time going back and forth with the bookings trying to find the cheapest deal so I would have just left it by accident.

I have 3 options, 1 is to try and wing it and hope they don't kick off when it comes to picking the car up, 2 is to add a secondary driver and hope they don't kick off about my age there and 3 is to let my girlfriend, who's 31 be the main driver and then just switch when we get round the corner, she's Australian and never driven here so she won't be doing any of the main driving.

What do you guys think? Anyone have experience with this?

Cheers

  • If she drives away and then you switch around the corner you won't be insured, as you won't be named on the rental agreement. You'll have to just phone them and pay the extra or cancel your booking

Cancel the order and go elsewhere. They will notice, they will check your lisence and you will be drivng ilegally if you swap over with your girlfriend.

But really, and I don't say this too lightly, if we have an accident where we physically can't switch drivers then who's named on the rental agreement probably won't be the most important thing on our minds.

Also, is it not easier to simply add an extra driver for a 10er a day?

    Definitely preferable.

There is a third option, which is not to be so narrow-minded as to assume that a female Australian is somehow incapable of driving on British roads. It's not even as she'll have to get used to being on the wrong side of the car...

How about a massive lawsuit from the people you maim/kill ? , you would be needing insurance if that happened...
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Add yourself as an extra driver and do it above board. It'll cost you a bit more (especially if the main driver has to be 30).

In any accident, you're going to have a difficult time trying to pretend she was driving if there were any witnesses or you can't keep to your story. The police are well aware of the swapping drivers trick. Seat position, air bag marks, what shoulder got hurt by the seat belt, who everyone sees climbing out the drivers side, and so on.

If caught you're looking at a ban and court time as well as being liable for any damage that is done. Ditto if there's not actually a driver but you get stopped for any other reason.

well i went on the enterprise site for a new quote

one week hire for a driver over 30 is exactly the same price as a weeks hire for a driver aged 25-30 so dont know why you are getting a quote four times the price
