Yes a single parent would be expected to manage on their own but all kids are different especially babies who need additional care. Majority of babies I guess are easy to manage on your own but some are not. So although they are expected to manage on their own sometimes when a baby needs additional care its not as easy as it may seem. Until someone does not experience this most do not understand.
I get it all the time where I get told he'll be fine and you should manage but if they were to spend one day in my shoes they'd surely understand the everyday struggle. Iv been struggling for 1 year and still no signs of son getting any better.
I'm not having a go at you but it just depends on each persons circumstances.0 -

Your partner can then be at home to help you do the caring & it takes the pressure away from him job seeking for now with all that entails. You can also claim council tax support as soon as you do this - free medication for adults as well as dental treatment with help towards costs of glasses if u wear them. I hope you take my advice. Wish U well.
My first step I guess is to apply for carers allowance. We are getting council tax support due to JSA but no help in interest mortgage payments as partner on contribution based JSA.
Will consider joint IS as I need as much as help as I can get but not sure how and whether I have to prove both of us are not capable of going to work and that it needs both of us to look after him.
I wouldn't survive mentally and physically if partner went to work. I am mentally and physically shattered as it is as it is so so hard to look after him. its been a tough year.
Iv put off claiming DLA been a year since he's been in this condition as couldv applied so much sooner. I had no choice as we're struggling financially.0 -
Hi Manu
When applying for Carer's Allowance it is easier and quicker to apply online at gov.uk
You may claim CA from the original date of the DLA decision if claiming within 1 month, if not CA will backdate for up to 3 months.Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -

If applying now, make your initial claim for Income Support (as a carer) on Monday and you can request up to 3 months backdating with good cause.
*You maybe refused, initially, when CA is awarded phone them up and ask for them to look at the claim again*
It maybe you were expected to claim when applying for DLA and they would have looked again at the claim but you can explain you have just received a decision on DLA claim, applied for CA from original claim date of DLA and would of been entitled to IS.
You also say you have been ill, if your illness would of prevented a claim ask support worker/GP for a supporting letter.
Once all benefits are in payment you should receive:
Carer's: £61.35
JSA: £72.40
IS: £14.15
CTC: £122.71
CB/DLA
After 13 weeks of being in receipt of IS you may qualify for help with mortgage interest, ask for a MI12 form and send to mortgage provider.
You haven't mentioned your income or are you a couple for JSA, if so should be receiving Income Based JSA top up and therefore mortgage help will be quicker.
If mot already receiving apply for help with Council Tax.Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -

just been awarded DLA so will try and backdate to start of DLA (2 months ago) as can't have applied sooner as DLA wasn't awarded so couldn't apply for carers
Is CTC amount you mentioned the additional amount for middle care DLA? Surely it can't be that much.
I haven't been claiming anything for the past year and not been working. Couldnt apply for JSA as couldn't actively seek work due to son. Couldn't apply income support as no Dla so wasn't a carer although was looking after son.
When partner applied for JSA in April due to being made redundant he wasn't aware he needed to be on income based to claim interest payments for mortgage. We found too late and since then never got round to changing to income based JSA as not getting much time away from son. Either way now IS or income jsa we'll have to wait 13 weeks for interest payments for mortgage unless they backdate IS so won't be as long.0 -
CTC includes the increased amount for a disabled child for a couple on IBJS/IS.
Let tax credits know of start date for DLA and update current income if not already, CTC are bassed on previous years income, you can ask for an estimate of 2014/15 income to be used in calc', there is a £2,500 disregard, example-eanings last year £22000, this year-£5500, income used £8,000 for new calc'.
When your partner claimed JSA did he not make a joint claim, they would of asked do you have a partner and asked about your circ's, this would of triggered an income based top up for yourself.
This would of depended on savings below £16,000 and other household income if any.
JSA for a couple would be £113.70 if over 25.Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -

Many babies without disabilities are not easy to manage - I speak from experience! And although you may not realise it, Tigs has a disabled son herself, so I'm sure that she does understand the everyday struggles that you face. Even if they're not exactly the same as your struggles, parents of disabled children usually face some sort of problems, not only with their child's condition, but also with getting help and understanding from doctors, Social Services, friends and family.0
