Clicking on help > check for updates in Opera directed me to the latest version, which I duly downloaded and installed. This closed the version I was browsing on, but when the new one appeared I was greeted with this: (I've no idea why Paint 5.1 has suddenly started leaving a huge white area underneath my screenshots!)

I repeated the check and the window in the top left appeared. What is going on? The details of this browser are
Version 12.17
Build 1863
Platform Win32
System Windows XP
Browser identification
Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.17

That is the last version of the original Opera, I do not believe that it is updated any more.
The LATEST version is 26.0. All new versions of Opera are based on Chrome open source.
I had the same thoughts as yourself, but found version 26.
