Built a family tree with "Latter-day-saints" PAF which is no longer supported. I can & have exported the files as .ged.
Any suggestions of a free package to use?? I'd need both Windoze & Apple Mac (for 2 sons) - unless anyone can recommend a Linux package
Regards & thanks in advance...

The Computeractive mag software workshop you refer to is My Family Tree.
It runs on Windows from XP up to 8.1 and is free to download
There's a new magazine out now so you won't be able to check it out in WH Smiths!
The short web address to download it is

Select the Orange button for 32 bit pc's or the Purple button for 64 bit.
I know you also want an Apple option as well but this info may help others.
I'm in the same situation as you as all my kit is either Windows or Android but I would want to share this info with my brother who only uses Apple.0 -
There are plenty out the for the Mac, the following link is a review page.

One of my friends recently started family research and is, I think, trying some of the free offerings. He was saying that they do work but all have limitations and none are really ideal.
I think he's coming around to the conclusion that he's going to have to buy one.
A family member uses Family tree maker and bought the version with either 6 months membership to Ancestry.co.uk
I was told that when membership is due it is cheaper to buy another copy of the software than pay the full subscription rate. whether that is still true or not I don't know. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
