Mobile to Mobile calls in Europe?

A simple (hopefully) question.

If making calls between 2 UK registered Mobile Phones, while in Europe (ie. both phones being used by people visiting Europe), do you still dial the 0044 prefix, or just the normal 07 number?

If you're not in the +44 area then you always add the +44, regardless of the location of the UK mobile you're calling.

its worked for me in Spain,France (a few weeks ago) and Canaries without putting the +44, I have all my numbers stored as 07 and could call mobile to mobile.
Caribbean was different had to add +44
I am on 02 not sure if this makes a difference
  • And there was me, thinking it was a nice straightforward question. :o

Is it possible that in the first three you were roaming on networks owned by Telefonica? They may have some behind the scenes connection between each of their networks that recognises what country the calling phone is from. That probably wouldn't be the case in the Caribbean.

That's really strange! I'm on O2 as well and it didn't work when I was in France.

Regardless, I wouldn't count on that working. There's no reason not to just have them stored as +44 in your phone anyway.

best way is to try it yourself, if it's you that is travelling,I would be interested to know if it works or not for you
  • It will be me.

I know ringing into the UK, definitely requires 0044, from both Belgium and Germany, because I had to edit my numbers, when I was ringing home from Berlin, last month.

The reason you're getting conflicting answers is that networks are different. If you don't use the country code, with some networks it will dial the local country and with others it will dial your home country. I think the more usual is to dial the local country.

Solution is to store all numbers with the country code. And when phoning the local country when you're there, use its country code.
