Chequecards were a slightly different issue.

They were not strictly credit when used to only spend funds in the account but when issued to an under 18 year old, the bank could not sue if they went overdrawn.

Many banks did issue them from 16+ if the account holder had a sufficient and regular income deposited into the account from work or a student grant.
(Indeed cheque cards were not normally available to under 18s, though I also had one with Girobank when I was 17.)

As for the OP, they can either be a secondary cardholder on an adult's card or simply make due with a Visa or MasterCard debit card...

A minor does not have the legal capacity to enter into any kind of contract of which getting a credit card is one.

16yos can get married (with some caveats)

I too had a secondary card on my fathers account when I was 16 - Lloyds TSB at the time.
Why did I have one? Because the Solo card I had at the time wasn't accepted everything. But for everything else, there was (the) MasterCard.

........But they cannot get a credit card in their own name which was the original question asked on this thread.
  • You are of course perfectly correct BUT nobody will let them because the contract will be unenforceable.
    :p

But no one wanting to enter into a contract with a minor is different to a minor not being legally able to enter into a contract. Plus as said for essentials the contract is binding on both parties which is how some teenagers have jobs and live alone.

For other contracts, like buying sweeties in a shop, the risk is low enough for a shop keeper to enter into a contract of sale with a minor.
  • Be as pedantic as you like but the answer to this thread is and always has been it is not possible for a 17 year old to apply for a credit card in their own name.
    Merry Christmas.

My daughter is a collage student ,has a debit card and earns around £250-300 PM

Can she get a credit card or does it have to be the prepaid type until she is 18?

    thanks
Why would she want one when only earning £300 in a month? She'd be better off being added to your card as a secondary card holder.

Yes, was on my dad's when I was 16.

    Now sure about now, though.

Capital One are the only card company that allow under 18s as an additional cardholder (they never ask for the DOB). Amex is changing its policy early next year to allow 13+ on additional cards.

That sounds like they are setting themselves up for an own goal.

Maybe that is why Brighton and Hove Albion are currently in the relegation zone and unable to win a match!
