Depends if you need to make an emergency call. Always telling my daughter off for that. Whats the point in using the phone and an mp3 player and games machine if its dead before you arrive home.

How are you supposed to contact someone or use to contact you in an emergency...

Now takes an mp3 player to listen to.

Get some backup system. I have 6 old car batteries in the shed. Kept topped up by solar panels. They are too weak to be used on a car but will power low wattage lighting and charge phones for ages.

We had a powercut sometime back. Dodgy underground wire down the street. Our house was still light up normally.
Portable gas stove kept the teas coming..
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • Thanks everyone. Basically, it looks like "one of those things" then in this sort of area. Will bear in mind that it might be worth reporting just in case of a faulty connection somewhere though.

I've got loads of candles anyway and have bought myself a flashlight since moving here (courtesy of street lighting here). I've got one of those camping stoves powered by mini gas cylinders anyway and must get round to learning to use it sometime. I presume its okay to use indoors, because its the same as one the teacher was using indoors before at a cookery course I was on one time - so if its okay for her......

I've got a gas fire in my sitting room, so okay for warmth if the electric goes off.

Looks like I've got to change my mindset a bit in case of power emergencies. Back in small city my basic preparation for it just boiled down to "I'll go out and stay out until it's sorted - lots of places to go/lots of places to eat out = no problem". Errrm....
