Sound quality from TVs is so poor I don't use it. I would be happy to have just a monitor but they are more expensive so I just buy TV with freeview tuner. It means if my Humax is recording 2 channels I can watch something else on TV at the same time. Adding the smart function to the TV seemed so expensive on a large TV it was cheaper to buy a simple TV and have another solution for the smart bit. I use an AV amp for sound.

It's a bit like buying a TV with an integrated DVD player. I would always buy a separate box because the TV is likely to last longer than the DVD player.
  • There was a big trend for buying displays rather than TVs a while back and you could negotiate the price down to about the equiv flagship TV price or cheaper so arguably bad value but most thought that as commercial equipment it would last longer and secondly a fair few wanted to use an external scaler and the best way to hook these up to the display was via an SDI connection rather than HDMI

Personally, I've just always accepted that I will have duplicated functionality and bought my TV based on its picture quality and if it happens to come with functions I dont want well so be it.

Just looking at new TVs. The additional premium for SMART seems to have come right down. In the early days people were paying massive premiums on large TVs for SMART. I could have built a full PC with HDMI out for less.

Depends on the TV. I'm quite fussy, and have 5.1 myself, but I can watch films at my mates house on his 47" LG and not be actively offended by the sound....TV sound has come a long way in the last few years.
