Missing funds from current account:

Hi all,
I getting very worried about some missing funds.
I wrote a cheque to pay a builder for my new house and my own fault didn't move the money over to my current account. The cheque bounced fair enough. Having rarly used cheques before I didn't realised that they represented themseleves again later on so I wrote the builder another cheque.
On the 9th December both cheques tried to be paid 1 was returned due to not enough funds as it tried to take double the amount.
Halifax have confirmed that one of the cheques has left my account but the builder hasn't recieved the funds. Halifax can't work out why he doesn't have them and have put something called a 'trace' on the cheque to locate it but this could take up to 6 weeks to find. Everytime I ring through to get an update I get someone different who starts at the beginning and comes up with different answers.
I meanwhile have an angry builder calling 5 times a day demanding money I now don't have as it has left my account.
Has anyone seen this happen before and has any ideas on how to resolve it?
Kind Regards

If the cheque bounced refer to drawer then they would have been sent back to the builder.
Ask him to return them to you before paying him again.
If indeed one cheque has been paid then it is up to the builder to reconcile his bank statement.
Ask him to show his statement to prove that he has not received the amount in question.0 -
The first cheque because of it being automatically represented a couple of days later has already gone automatically. I am still waiting for a copy of the cheque that was accepted to come in the post to show that it has credited somewhere.
He has shown the statement and the funds aren't showing.
Halifax just say it could take them up to 6 weeks to trace where the funds are, but currently both myself and the builder are missing money.0 -
Halifax's clearing department will have a digital statement of the 2 transactions - taking 6 weeks to find this is worthy of a formal complaint especially if the builder is pressuring you to pay again.
Does he also bank with Halifax or another bank?
Just a last thought - check your own statement in case they have refunded you twice.0
