How late should I book?

I've decided to go and have a week or so away over the Christmas break and I'm not that bothered about where I go as long as it's warm (not hot) and just want to relax.

Obviously I'm looking to get the best possible deal.

I can probably book the day before I go. Is it worth leaving it that late or will I get the same types of deal before then?

Any advice would be very welcome.

it is a peak time for travel so not many deals about. If you see something at a price you like then book or take the risk of paying more or not getting away at all

The good deals went some time ago, travel around Christmas and New Year is like the first Saturday of the school holidays when you pay the highest prices of the year. They are saying 4m people are travelling this Christmas so start looking immediately or look forward to a Christmas lunch at McDonalds

If you were thinking about going away for New Year, peak-cheapness for many places seems to have been about 10-14 days ago. Since then they have been rising steadily - about 30-50% for the places I'm looking at.

I'm trying to fit a few days away around a relative's medical treatment and of course they are being "flexible" with her appts! :(
