When you say the computer is "off" do you mean shutdown or in sleep mode?
Shutdown as in power/shutdown, used to be start/shutdown.
Then the power saver adapter clicks and everything connected through that is off.
I would switch everything off at the wall socket but that is behind a cupboard with an extension lead plugged into it which the power saver adapter is plugged into.
Technically the computer is off but still plugged into a live socket.
The only way to turn the computer on is to push the power button, well it was until the other night.
It is never on in the morning when I go to turn it on.
I don't know if the computer was on or off when my wife saw it, all I know is she saw the flashing amber light that indicates the monitor is in power saving mode.
There is no router in the room, the computer is on the floor under a shelf and no lights or LEDs or anything like that is visible.
Also it is connected to the internet by wifi with the USB adapter not visible.
It may have turned itself on on other nights at the same time but this is the first time it has been noticed as the room door is normally closed but because we were storing something in the room, actually stuffed in the doorway, the door wasn't able to close.over 73 but not over the hill.0 -
Smoke alarms can flash an occasional heartbeat LED - could have been a quirk of timing?0

Does that mean you don't have smoke alarms?
Paddy was intimating that it might not even have been the monitor light, but something else (like a smoke alarm). Your wife (in her half-asleep state) may have confused something else for the monitor light.0 -

Is he actually thinking that someone could confuse a flashing amber light on a desk 3 feet above the ground in front of them for a red pinpoint light on the ceiling 6 feet behind them?
I sometimes wonder about folk.

The light she saw was the monitor light.
Or a reflection of another light. You've told us the computer and monitor was off, so it must have been another light.
Strangely, I don't know the layout of your house or the colour of lights your Mrs saw or that your peripherals have, however a flash from 6 feet behind reflecting on a CRT or glossy monitor could be mistaken for a different source, especially in the middle of the night. The smoke alarms in my flat have a green light, not dissimilar to the amber one on question.
But hey, it's a guess what with me not having been there at the time or having a clue about the plan of your house or the equipment you buy or your wife's specificity about light colours.

Well either you have a ghost or you didn't turn it off like you thought, especially if windows was doing one of those annoyingly long updates before shutting down. And if the missus is teetotal perhaps she's a secret lemonade drinker....R.Whites?? :-)My Mind wanders, if found please return.0
