Paint experts please - melamine kitchen cabinets

Hi all

Having done some research here and there, I have decided that the best way to paint my wood effect melamine cabinets is to prime with ESP.

I am after some advice on what paint to put on - I want a white, contemporary look. I think a gloss would show fingerprints too much so am thinking something like an eggshell. Most important is that it doesn't peel off after a few months/years and stays as white as possible. Something like this?

Any recommendations appreciated

Thanks Stevie - read that one and she used F&B. Oddly she lives very near me, maybe should get her round to do the work!

Any other opinions from decorators or DIYers who have done this?

Oooooooh!! Thread hijack! We have old fitted wardrobes in our bedroom. Very old. Cream-ish melamine originally that's gone very dingy. However, it's a large bedroom plus dressing room so replacing the wardrobes with new will be a £15k project and is therefore a few years off!

I never thought it was possible to paint them. I might get some ESP and try it on an inconspicuous corner. Might make them more bearable for a few years, though I'm scared of getting a terrible toddler style finish that will make me want to rip them out sooner. :rotfl:

My poor hubby painted all the cupboard doors inside and out in our kitchen. 4 coats on each side!!! He is a a perfectionist and has the patience of a saint though.

That was a total of 24 door and drawers and surrounds.

These were real wood though but the finished result is very good.

I primed mine with ESP and then painted with normal matt emulsion. Finished with a couple of coats of matt water proof varnish. Very hard wearing.

I made most of my kitchen from second hand units with several different colour finish doors, I lightly rubbed them down and spray painted them with cheap tins of white gloss paint from Family Bargains (no undercoat used !!), the result was almost indistinguishable from the few new units that were in the kitchen originally.
This was 6 months ago and they are still perfect and wipe down just as well as the original new units.
