I was given the wrong credit card!

Hello all!

I have a quick question about my credit card. I originally took out my Barclaycard credit card online around February 2012 believing it to offer 0% on purchases for 24 months, this is the main reason I got this particulate card as I was struggling with money and needed the time to pay the money back.

I was approved the card and went about my merry way spending what I needed on the card.

By month two, I had spent around £2000 on the card as I was out of work for that time.

During the third month, barclaycard contacted me saying that the first repayment/minimum payment was due next month etc. of course I was like "what? This must be wrong?!" So I rang them up and they said "oh no your credit card is 0% on purchases for 3 months..."

Not happy.

I didn't think there was anything I could do at the time so accepted I had possibly done something wrong but thinking about it now, I know I applied for 24 months because I knew I wasn't going to have a wage for a while and so would not be able to start payments. I was reading about PPI recently and heard about credit cards being missold as well. If someone could advise me on my rights about this, I'd be very grateful!!

Many thanks in advance!

You would still have to pay a monthly payment on a 0% credit card, it wouldnt have been two years not paying anything at all.

I don't remember Barclaycard ever doing a 24 month 0% on purchases card. I do remember them doing 24 months 0% on BTs and an accompanying 3 months 0% on purchases, so maybe that's where the confusion (on your part) lies?

Even though the card may offer 0% interest, you still need to make a circa 2.25% minimum payment each month...from the second month onwards.

  • Just because it's 0% interest doesn't mean you don't have to make monthly payments, just that no interest is added.

Have you got the statements from when you got the card?
They will plainly show what the minimum repayment would be from second statement on whatever deal you were on.
