T-Mobile dis!!!! removed without warning

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me. My partner has been with T-Mobile for over 8 years and had the friends and relations for life discount (50% discount) on his contract. When his upgrade was due recently, he went into the T-Mobile store to upgrade. The person who served him told him that the deal he took (which moved him from T-Mobile to EE) would not affect his friends and relations discount and that he would pay a certain amount each month.
When the first bill from EE was taken from his account it was for a lot more than the agreed price so he called EE and the person he spoke to apologised that they hadn't applied the discount, said they would add it and deduct the overcharge from his next bill. The next bill has come out today and again, it is for a lot more than it should be but when he spoke to them today he was advised that because his family member had left T-Mobile he was no longer eligible for the discount (she left 6 years ago and this never affected the discount previously as its a "for life" discount). They are now refusing to apply the discount and have told him he's stuck with paying this full price contract for the remainder (2 years!). When he questioned this, the operator told him that they didn't have to give him any notice of the cancellation of the discount.
Can anybody tell me if there is anything we can do... obviously, if he hadn't been told (twice) that the discount would still be active, he wouldn't have upgraded and moved to EE. At no point was he ever told that the discount was going to be removed.
The other thing is, the first bill came out on the 1st December and they have taken the 2nd bill today (17th December) just over two weeks later which was not expected and has caused the direct debit to decline and thus resulting in a bank fine.
Any help would be much appreciated.
