Why have I gone overdrawn on a solo account?

I'm being nice :T, it's just another case of how the fat cats try to fob off the little manI can't tell if you are being nice or sarcastic.
Was it an Electron transaction that they paid?
I know Abbey National used to bounce them all the time, I know because they issued the cards before every retailer's terminal could tell the difference between Visa Electron and a Visa Card. It is still the case with what was British Rail, the machines ticket collectors have will happily accept Electron, but the collector is told not to accept the cards and it used to be the same with the old machines in ticket offices I think called APTIS or something like that (the grey ones they dropped the tickets in to, they had no connection to the bank) British Rail and the new train companies who still use them (if there are any left) have a floor limit of £99.99.

Doesn't alter the fact that you have goods to the value of £315 from the merchant. The fact is that you spent this money , you knew it had not come out of your account, or should have known it is your responsibility.
The best I think you can hope for here is a period of time to repay and no o/d charges to be passed to the account.
Is it a case here of you thinking well they haven't taken the money so I've got a freebie and so I will spend the money in the account?0 -
Are you sure you paid using your solo card? Paypal can also use Direct Debit if you have it set up.
I went overdrawn last month because I lost the credit card I had linked to paypal and got a replacement card, and I hadn't updated it so when I sent a paypal payment it didn't work and defaulted to using my bank account, which had no money in it!I work for Post Office, feel free to ask me anything!0 -
Hi ejones999
I dont think that is what anyone is saying.
I think they are complaining they have been given a card on the condition "you cannot go overdrawn with this".
If you cannot go overdrawn with it, you cannot incur any debts or charges from paid card tansactions as the money is taken off the available balance so you cannot spend it again until it is debited (or so it is supposed to be).
If an error then occurs and you are human and forget what you bought 6 months ago (and I dont think I am being naive thinking people simply forget or spend it again when you dont have much money and much choice) and then suddenly this appears and you have to pay not only for the goods or services but bank charges the bank has broken its contract with you and it has not followed the Card Scheme Rules.
The bank or a bank (the merchant if different) or a retailer is making an error and the customer is paying for it.
I have no doubt the customers are willing to pay up but perhaps the bank having the humility to admit its error and allow the customer to pay it off in weekly payments without charges, is not that much to ask. Either that or they need to stop giving these cards to 11 years olds and end their claim that you cannot go overdrawn with this card and you need to keep count of your balance for the next 6 years in case we make a mistake. I can't see them going down that road somehow, which is what some people on here a practically advocating.

So does that mean you don't keep a note of your uncleared cheques? Surely you are responsible for all your financial commitments.0

Why is the bank at fault?
Surely if an error has occurred then it is because of something going wrong with the merchant side of things.
However if I bought something for £315 from anywhere I would know if the debit had come from my account or not.
It may be because I am careful with money - who knows?0 -
in the United Kingdom. It is a sister to the Maestro debit card. Solo was launched in 1997 for use on deposit accounts, as well as by customers who do not qualify for a Switch (now Maestro) card on current accounts. Solo is issued as a multifunction cash card by National Westminster Bank (now part of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group) to customers over the age of 11 and by HSBC Bank (formerly Midland Bank) to customers over the age of 13. Like its main rival, Visa Electron, Solo cards require all transactions receive electronic authorisation from the issuing bank. Such authorisation will not be given if there are insufficient cleared funds in the cardholder's account and the funds are earmarked, if not transferred, immediately. Acceptance is not as widespread as Maestro, but has increased substantially in recent years. Solo cards usually function as Maestro for use abroad.0

I thought a company could present for payment anything for up to six years, I know that happend with my SOLO account with Natwest when I had one, I bought from PC for £49:99 and they didnt take the payment for six weeks although I had the sence to know it hadnt been taken and left if there for when it did. I did ask Natwest telphone banking and they confirmed it depends when the company did there tallying up and things, so really if you did spend 300 something pounds and the merchant didnt poast them for as while the bank cant refuse and say no sorry no money, because you have already had the goods hence why it might take you over your limit, but i dont think you would be charged over draft fees and that, I managed to go in debit several times and they didnt charge me anything, just had to make the diffrence up.0

it is a third party contract ie, between the merchant and the person buying the goods. The bank cannot stop the payment. I would add that anyone who believes they cannot go overdrawn on a bank card with a payment facility on the card, either maestro or solo for example, is unfortunately incorrect.0
