I had about 5-6 weeks in between when selling. It suited me as my new place wasn't ready, and it suited the buyer because he didn't have a tenant lined up until then.

I'd definitely want 3-4 weeks minimum.

Just a funny (it wasn't at the time!) story from years ago.
We had sold our house and needed to be out of it before the completion date for the one we were buying. Whereas the sellers were having problems with the set completion date due to their other arrangements falling through.
I can't believe we did this but we agreed an informal compromise. We moved in with all our stuff a week before completion and the deal was they could stay till a week after completion. The solicitors would have had a fit if they had known.
So there we were all living together with two of everything. The seller turned out to be a tad eccentric. She didn't work and would spend all day on the sofa in her dressing gown applying expensive lotions and potions to her face. Her husband worked away during the week. If there was any disagreement she would say in broken English, 'I cut off ze phone and I take it with me'.
A week after completion they were still there. Two weeks on still there. Then one day I overheard the husband on the 'phone telling someone he had no intention of moving any time soon.
That was it. We read the riot act and they moved out a week later. We cheered behind the net curtains as their removal van drove away. Never again!

I'm probably in the minority but I would prefer to exchange and complete on the same day. I stress so much I would still worry about something going wrong between exchange and completion even though it shouldn't so would prefer to do it all on the same day! But then I am selling and buying - not going into rental so slightly different scenario to the OP

    snap!

I love exchange and completion on same day...did that before

this time I have exchanged today and am completing on monday 22nd, brilliant still would have preferred it all in one day if I could have

Monday going to get keys :)

I am going to ask to exchange and complete on the same day with our purchase as soon as it is a bit more underway. The vendors are not living in it anyway so there is no forward chain!
