New sat nav - could do with some help

Hi,

My sat nav has finally died and as I often work in areas where I'm not familiar, I need a new one. I was hoping someone could recommend one.

I need it to use the full postcode (my old one only used part of the postcode and sometimes I don't know the street name as I'm not given it).

I also used websites such as Findthebestroute to work out the most efficient way of doing things. Is there a sat nav our there which would let me upload the route from a spreadsheet or similar?

I had a Tom Tom for a short while, but struggled with getting the USB cable in as the slot was recessed into the unit, so I probably couldn't go for a Tom Tom.

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mandy.

  • What sort of phone have you got? There are some very good ones available as apps that will probably do all you want (and more)
  • I have a Galaxy S4 Mini, but the screen is a bit small. I have an early onset cataract in one eye, so need something a bit bigger.
  • i sold my sat nav and now use an app called waze... it works fine and i have had no issues and its free, so try before you buy a sat nav

OP - unless you plan to get a new phone with a bigger screen (in which case I'd suggest NavFree as it lets you download maps so you don't need to rely on a data connection), then you'll need to get a larger screen satnav, such as what martinthebandit links.

In reality, the choice is between Garmin and TomTom and whatever you're willing to pay. (And if that is a sizeable amount then a new large screen phone may be a realistic option).

  • Wow, think I'm sold on this. I often work out of area and will have maybe 12 jobs to do. Sometimes I get phoned while I'm out and offered more work, and this often means I add it onto the end of my route, which is not the most efficient way. Sounds like this sat nav could be perfect. I had a Garmin once before and liked it.
  • I just use the built in googlemaps on my iphone. Used full postcodes.

On my Garmin I just add the new destination and then get the thing to create the optimum route for whatever 'via-points' are left to visit.
