Hi,

I'm going to need to buy a Tom Tom I think. It's my understanding that they're the best type of satellite car map. Is this right? Anyway, I would like to purchase one on HP as I don't want have that man funds available at this moment. Does anybody know where I would be able to purchase one in this way? Thanks.

Two quid at just about any petrol station.

Even contemplating financing a SatNav is just ridiculous.

I have one. But one of those doesn't inform you if there are delays or diversions. A Tom Tom does.

How did you deduce that Tom-Tom was the best?

    I prefer the Garmin.

Did you read Bedsit Bob's recent thread?

No, it doesn't. Not unless you get a higher-end one with some kind of data subscription (or use a satnav app on a smartphone). The only thing that a satnav receives is your current location, calculated from the delays in very accurate time signals transmitted by three or more of the ~30 GPS satellites. Everything else is calculated from what's stored in the device's memory. That _might_ include major roadworks updated by USB from your computer, but definitely not "The road from Little Doofus to Nether Wiggly is closed for the next couple of hours because some numpty's hit a tree".

And an atlas does a _much_ better job of allowing you to plan a diversion if, f'rinstance, motorway signs warn you many miles away - because a satnav won't recalculate your route until you actually diverge from the route it expects you to take, and even then it may well try to get you back on the route it wants - which it doesn't know is closed.

My old satnav you can avoid part of route, or avoid roadblock in x amounts of distance, or travel via - has helped me out a few times coming up on accidents and closures.
Is old, out of date, no live travel info, and does just fine.

If you decide to buy a Tom Tom, do not buy it from their website, they took 35 days to deliver mine and that was only because I kept calling and not believing the BS they were feeding me.

My favourite of the process is me reading my address out (Repeatedly)

    "Unit z, Newline"
    "XYZ Limited, Newline"
    "5 The road, New Line"
    "London, Newline"
    "Post code"

    It was addressed to

    Newline Unit z
    XYZ Newline
    5 The Road Newline
    Newline
    London

Their website was ranked 97th out of 100th (100 being the worst) worst websites for customer service recently

My Garmin Nuvi does diverts and avoidances due to delays accidents and roadworks.

It receives live 'real-time' updates and informs me of any delays anywhere along the route.

I pay no subscription for that at all.

Really really wouldn't take out finance on one.
Either ebay as suggested above, or, if you need one now & then not for a while, rent one for that one journey & then save up for one.

And how does it receive those updates? Bluetooth from your phone, via your phone's data connection?
