Can we have a varity of opinions on how much to tip, especially at Christmas!
My postman is great and I normally give him £5, but in 2014 is this too low, but I feel that £10 would be much much too much!

I don't tip now.
In answer to your question, he will be very very happy with a fiver.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I tip the postman £10, if I can find him, as in the run up to Christmas, I seem to get a variety of postmen/women. I put it in a Christmas card for him.0

I only see the postie at the weekend .I never tip ."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0

Most people are banned by their employer from accepting gratuities from customers. Even so, i dont tip anyway.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

Most have limits rather than outright bans.
Postmen can still receive tips.
OP I give mine a fiver and he couldn't be more thankful. Really nice man, does a great job especially this time of the year and deserves it for walking in that weather carrying his massive bag of my crap. I tip the binmen and the folks tip the window cleaner too.0 -
I don't have a regular postie and this time of year we have a different one every day and we all get each others post so have to redeliver it in the evening

I do tip the binmen in a wee christmas card and they are very thankful for that, I also get my bin returned to my driveway every week whilst others are left in a group at the side of the road, so it's a few quid well invested.
I give my barber a quid extra every time I'm in for a cut, but she gets a fiver at christmas, very nice lady and very underpaid for her skills.I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0 -
Anyone noticed that a few years ago if you had a tradesman do a job for you at a quoted price, they quite often handed you back a tenner as a "lucks penny" . Nowadays though after the job is finished they expect a tip on top of the agreed price. I'm not mean but I hate tipping in any form. In fact personally I would feel like a beggar if someone tipped me. I think its shamefulI started out with nothing......And still have most of it left:p0

#10 I must admit that i hadnt heard the lucky penny thing before. I would not expect a tip on the agreed price. However i recently bought a nice new carpet for hall stairs and landing. The price for fitting was a fixed fee agreed with the independent carpet shop who give excellent service. Considering that both the guys who did it were pleasant and did a great job, i didnt think the agreed amount was enough for their great work so added a tenner.
I know what you mean about feeling like a begger and maybe some customers feel that way too and so no longer offer.
I have been in situations in the past where i have undertaken work for a customer that i was not obliged to do,and if i hadnt done it,would have left them in a much worse position but have now learned that most are essentially selfish and dont even offer or give you the wink so i now almost always leave them in the much worse and much more expensive position..especially at this time of year and the run up to holidays.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry).
