International Sim Cards v Normal Sim

We're off to Australia via Dubai and Singapore and wondered if anyone had experience of using International sim cards versus adds on's to your existing m/b contract - I have a pay monthly Sim Contract on a Blackberry but do have an unlocked Samsung

There's a few recommendations on the main site which I'm thinking of as the EE deals seem incredibly complicated and a bit open ended - I'm not too worried about Data as it's easy to get WIFI access just if we have to make calls or texts when away - possibly between Australia and the other Destinations

Any pointers would be appreciated

We used a 3 Feel at Home SIM successfully in the states, and it also covers Australia. Get a £15 bundle and you get something like 300 mins, 3000 texts and 1gb of data.
The only issue we had was that occasionally the data connection would drop out, and we'd have to turn the phone off and on again.

Edit - can you get your phone unlocked?

Also, if you have your home phone with Virgin Media you can download an app to make calls over wifi, using the same tariff for calls as your home phone. (I haven't used it yet)

No experience of International sims, but in the US we just got a local US T mobile sim from the T mobile shop with a unlimited texts, Data, calls for $2 a day, Data wasn't the fastest available at that price but was faster than it was here on 3G, maybe similar in Australia from a local phone shop?
  • Is phone contact really essential?

FaceTime, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Skype etc all provide rather cheap methods of communication if you have access to wifi.

The rest of the time? Well we all coped before mobile phones didn't we?

You can also do this if you have a BT line. The App is called "BT Smart Talk".
