Tonight marks the start of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah (also spelt Chanukah), celebrating the defeat of the Syrian-Greek army by the much smaller Maccabees, reclaiming the Holy Temple and freeing the Jewish people. This all happened 2100 years ago, and it is mainly remembered for the miracle of the oil in the temple burning for 8 days, when there was only 1 days oil available.

Because of this, Jewish families celebrate by lighting a Menorah for 8 nights, and eating oily food such as doughnuts. Presents are given and songs are sung.

A nice explanation of this all is here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/cbeebiesgrownups/posts/How-our-family-celebrates-Chanukah

It is a festival celebrating freedom from oppression and shining light into the darkness. To all, I'd like to wish you a happy Hanukkah
