British Gas Refuse to change meters from Pre Pay to Credit
Options
Hi can anyone help
Phoned British Gas to change meters from PrePay to Credit.
BG refused as failed credit check.
I thought that was odd (thought i had a good credit history - use the free one)
BG advised they have done a credit check through experian and experian said no, therefore out of BG's hand.
They advised me to join experian and i would see the search on there by BG showing that i had failed.
Joined experian - no search carried out by BG.
Phoned experian - advised BG have not done a credit check
Phoned BG - insisted they have done credit check with experian and failed.
Stuck in the middle
Note credit score: 999

Switch to a new supplier. I once failed a BG credit check, probably due to being in a new address and hence no electoral roll etc. I phoned up npower and they were happy to have me, and cheaper too.
ps don't pay for your credit score, it's a conChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
Hi adr0ck,
Did you switch and did it work for you? I have found myself in the same situation.
thank you0 -
I also failed a credit check with BG but i have not been refused credit anywhere else, i think they dont want to change the meter as they will be getting less money from you Im going to be changing supplier too0

Phew, they have been a nightmare the whole entire time.
I am never going with British Gas again, they lied before Christmas saying they had set me up and then when I called back they apparently had no record of this.0 -

For the last couple of years, under severe political pressure, pre-pay rates have been brought more in line with other tariffs.
So the incentive is not to get more money from customers; in fact the pre-pay scheme is much more expensive for the companies to administer.0 -

Its worth changing supplier just to lower standing charges a bit. EDF in my area is £1.33 a week , BG is £1.80 . Kwhr rates seem similar , 13.2p a kwh for EDF /14p for BG0 -

These meters take a lot of upkeep, plus a payment to the top-up shop. The politicians got involved a few years back in the costs of prepay meters when the truth leaked out that the poorest in the country were paying the highest prices so the prepay rates were subsidised down to the standard/variable.Standing charges on these meters are also the exact same price as credits.

I know they did bring the cost down but it is still the highest tariff and therefore the poorest people in the country are still paying the highest amount.0 -
