Big Spending About to Be Done.

Hi All,

I've done quite a bit of research but it's a mine field out there so I'm hoping some advice from the experts of this forum may help me further.

Basically I have just bought a house, and I am about to start furnishing it as you can imagine a few grand is going be spent. I have the cash to pay it direct out of a debit card, but I am well aware of the rewards that you can get from spending such funds in the introductory period of certain credit cards.

I have looked into the Amex one's in great detail especially with the increasing number of offers coming up with them recently especially the £25 'CB' on a £50 Argos purchase. But the majority of those seem to require a £20,000 min household income which is something which I don't have.

What I do have is a very, very good credit history. I have another credit card which this one may replace, the credit limit at the moment is just £500 and there are no rewards with it. I pay it off in full every month by direct debit.

Can anyone advice the best possible cards to look at particularly any AMEX cards that I would be eligible for along with the cashback type of thing they offer such as the Argos deal?

Thanks in advance.

I have a MBNA More Rewards, which gave me 2% back on AmEx spend and 1% on Visa spend in the first 90 days. This is redeemable against Argos, Currys, WH Smith, Waterstones, Next and other vouchers.

I don't think there was a minimum household income on there, but I may be misremembering. Worth a look :)

Thanks... I looked at some of the cards giving points that went into Avios so they could be spend on airmiles but then the taxes and charges were more than the cheapest flights I could find to some of the destinations I looked at :rotfl:

Do you get the Rewards like the £25 CB on the £50 spend in Argos today then?
  • Also I'm going to the USA in Jan so one that's kind to abroad spending would be a bonus!

This seems to be the only other AmEx card I can find outside of the AmEx solo cards that require a £20k + Household income.

Does it come with the perks such as this £25 Cashback on a £50 spend in Argos? Foursquare perks etc....?
  • May I ask why you think you have a good credit history, yet you only have a £500 credit limit?

I think you might struggle to get a card with a high enough credit limit for what you want. You might end up better off if you try and get a 0% purchases card and then stooze the money you would have spent (high interest account etc). I'd try with a generous lender like BarclayCard.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.
