instantaneous hot water heater

Why is it not possible to fit a Redring 3Kw instant water heater above the sink, and just plug it into a 13A socket ? I am aware that 3Kw is close to the limit of current draw via a 13 A plug, but this is how they are supplied !
I wouldn't bother though as they are no good. Ripped 4 of them out of our building at work. 3kW is not enough juice to heat cold water with an acceptable flow rate. You will get a dribble of hot, or a slightly larger dribble of tepid water. They are around 50 pounds to buy....0 -
Oh Dear !! that's a pity, as I was hoping to go down that route too....
my property only has electricity, on E7, very large un-insulated copper tank in airing cupboard, with immersion in top, and pointless heating up a whole tank for 4 hours, just to wash hands or one cup/plate daily in the kitchen sink !
Yes, I boil a kettle too (I do not live in an Abbey ) to get kitchen hot water, and have 7Kw shower in bathroom, that conveniently will fill the sink for a good shave too ! Is this primeval living, or just MSE style?
Are those 3Kw heaters REALLY that bad - there is a selection of makes on thebay around that price...my experience of them in various garden centre cafe's is that they work well for hand washing...
Istar, I am dis-appointed...16 x Enhance 250w panels + SolarEdge Inverter + TREES0 -
If your hot tank is un-insulated, then the best thing would be to get a really thick lagging jacket for it. Or buy a new tank.
Mine is one of the modern foam-insulated ones. The tank is heated at 8am every day, and is still hot at 11pm when I do the washing up before going to bed.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Ectophile is right.
You can insulate your tank to a good standard for less than buying an instantaneous heater. If it is insulated properly and left on for the E7 timer, it wont cost much to keep it hot. My old tank would stay hot right up until the next E7 charge, and the more heat you keep in the less it costs to top up.
Just sort out some proper insulation and you'll be fine.0 -
Thanks Ectophile / Istar ! I did look at the £15 insulating jackets from Screwfix and others, they are feeble red plastic lace-up rubbish, about 1 inch thick, that originally was on the cylinder
(long story, but dear mother used to have the (now non -working) 1955 Rayburn boat anchor stove so hot, that it melted all the insulation !!! )
(a few scraps still evident, stuck to the tank...)
What, roughly would be the cost of a new, foam - lagged modern tank, plus fitting ? many hundreds, I presume ???
