I think it needs to remain.

While no longer compulsory, annuities can and will be the best route to take for many in the future. For those with smaller pots or pots small enough to make sure no IFA is interested in their business, to those who cannot or do not want to run their DD portfolios themselves.

I would be looking for help to start drawing down my pension.

I am finished with mortgages, saving and would like to finish work as well or at least cut it back to a bare minimum now that I'm 55.
I want advice on what to do with my various pension funds.
I did try asking on another thread but didn't get very far, I feel if there was an area set aside for this type of subject, it might help others as well as myself and come april when the rules change, I want to be ready.

It sounds like you need to seek the services of a local IFA if you want help to set up a sustainable DD.

So falls like this week means more bang for your monthly buck.

Perhaps its part of a longer term correction. Japanese stagnation has lasted 25 years now. Credit growth was the root cause of the over valuation of the Nikkei.

but you said you want to be ready for the new rules coming in April; you need to talk to an IFA now.

Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning is the title, you're right Jez. But personally I've always seen it as a board for pension and annuities. I don't read every post, but people coming on to say they are/have retired early are usually reporting on what they HAVE done rather than looking for info on what they could do. .......

Oh dear, you sound as if your mind is made up and this will happen. Ignoring the 'Retirement Planning' part of the Thread title does not support or justify your proposal, quite the opposite. Why you've always seen it as something it isn't rather baffles me.
Seems a shame as I rather fancy the majority of the regular knowledgeable respondents won't bother to peruse two threads.

I don't disagree with that as good advice for many - but why have annuities in the title and not other income stream possibilities. I don't feel very strongly about this though, just a discussion point. Leaving everything alone is fine by me.
  • It's already in the title and discussed ad infinitum at various points. I first came to this board when thinking about early retirement and planning for that, so the board title and content is not necessarily misleading.

As already pointed out there will probably be some interesting discussions with people posting from the MFWB board along the lines of "why have you wasted all that opportunity overpaying the mortgage at the expense of other retirement planning vehicles?"

I have read the MFWB and IMHO it should be that board that has a 'rounded' sub forum focused on maximising personal wealth / reaching financial independence / retirement planning, or whatever incarnation, as a way of stimulating thought beyond the overpaying obsession?

I already did and it was him that suggested postponing my plans until April when the new rules will allow me to do what I actually want to do.
