Neighbour burgled - anything I can do for them?

  • I would suggest your neighbours get an alarm, or at least a dummy box or dummy cctv cameras - that is usually enough of a deterrent.

I don't think they will want too much advice so close to the incident - I would focus more on making sure that they haven't had any presents stolen that they don't know about and if they have maybe a neighbourhood whip-round to help them replace them?

That is what I would do anyway :)

Hubby's parents normally stay when we're away so we very rarely leave the house empty anyway.

I hope they don't leave their house empty to do that.;)

My family got burgled with a large Doberman having free rein of the house. We think they hit or drugged him then shut him in the kitchen.

My workmate got done last Friday. She was in bits yesterday still; very teary - and she's a tough cookie.

Scum of the earth aren't they :(

For practical short term help, I 'd suggest helping them to identify what's been taken. Some stuff will be obvious, but we noticed things that were missing months later, and by that time felt it was to late to claim on the insurance.

Longer term I would recommend an alarm. Don't get a dummy box, we had one and as was pointed out to us unless you get up there and wash it every now and then it's going to look like a dummy (hopefully a proper alarm will be serviced and cleaned).
We had a second visit after 9 months. It was the same people as they went straight up to the safe, without touching anything else. They did a runner when the alarm went off, leaving their tools behind.

No security will stop them coming in, but you can make it more difficult to get in, and try to stop them hanging around.
