"Free Wi Fi", connected, but no internet

Right Moto G phone, in Hi Fi area, "Connected, Signal strenght strong" , but no internet "You are not connected, etc"........yes Wi Fi is set to on, yes ive tried switching it of & on again, yes ive registered where necessary. Works fine domestically, & it sometimes works, but I recon at least 40% of the time it dosent. Asking staff is a waste of time, on 1 occasion someone had a "mac" phone that was working perfectly. Moto G supposed to be a good phone?

There are many places where you can connect to the wifi network but not the internet.

Whose wifi are you connecting to?

The last one was Beefeater, but Ive had this at other locations, what exactly is the point of connecting to the Wi Fi, but not the internet?

There may be a charge involved and so a company will let you connect to their wifi and then should you wish to connect to the internet you pay for it.

I have a Moto G and it is very good at connecting to even weak wifi signals. However, as has been said, connecting to a network doesn't necessarily give you access to the internet. Many shops, pubs, restaurants airports etc. require you to register on their network first. This will mean giving an email address and sometimes your mobile number so that they can send you a verification code.

More often than not, they will then use this info spam you to death.

You can certainly connect to the wifi without registering.

I can see where you are coming from with this as my partner, who is new to smartphones, has similar problems and has to get me to login for her. AS you say, the phone will show the wifi connected symbol but all you are connected to is the router in the shop.

I find that the wifi connection screen to sign onto the internet is often on a different browser (Chrome) to the one I use as standard (Opera).

So, to establish an internet link (on my android phone), where the wifi symbol appears I pull down the tab on the upper edge of the screen to show the wifi connection details and it will say Login to O2 or the Cloud etc. Tap that and a Costa Coffee (or whoever) page will open up where you then enter your user name and password.

Strangely enough I have found that an app such as Hot UK Deals gets straight into the internet without logging in onto the Cloud but as soon as I try and access a 'normal' website the page says I'm not connected and I have to login as above.

There are plenty of places where you can connect to the free wifi, however if you wish to use the internet then when you open your browser you are taken to a registration page.

    Not at all uncommon.
