Remember, emails are just text, and are easy to fake.
There's no signing process to guarantee the "sender" sent it, or that the contents are trustworthy.

This message is safe because it's been tested by Mirno's super awesome virus scanner.
Also the sender is ruggedly handsome and should be sent money by you.

The receiver of the document should know if they expect such a document or deal with the company its from and needs to make an intelligent decision.

Even if they were expecting a document fom that company it makes no difference to dealing with the email recieved -
email from a do not reply address and an attached doc file, the decision is already made - it's spam - delete it.

If a company were to send out valid invoices like that they deserve not to be paid. :D

Unfortunately that's not how the world works. Do Not Reply addresses are very common and while most companies use PDF's (just as bad to be honest) others send word or excel files.

    As examples ...

    Amazon use digital-no-reply@amazon..
    O2 use noreply@o2.
    Tesco Clubcard uses Noreply@clubcardrewards.tesco.

Others may use addresses so generic that they cannot be monitored due to sheer volumes of traffic, ie :

    Ebay use Ebay@ebay.....

However you are right that it any incoming document needs to be deal with in the same, way, if you have a contract with the alleged sender then you need to know if they send it, be that by contacting them, or making an intelligent call on the documents authenticity.. Giveaways such as bad spelling, vagueness in the email, not sent to you directly but BCC'inc many people are all signs of a possible scam but, and this is a major but, even the most spammy- ist email can be genuine.

The answer is can be as simple as to use DMARC, but that can create other issues, but don't ever think that just deleting email on the basis its got an attachment and it comes from a do not reply address is a great solution in itself.
