Map updates on Sat Nav.

I've recently bought a Garmin Nuvu 55LMT Sat Nav.

When I connected it to my Laptop and downloaded the program for managing it, it said there's a 2.8GB map update.

A quick question, if I may.

What happens if the download is interrupted, eg. the connection is lost, part way through the update?

Will it knacker up the maps on the Sat Nav?

No need to worry, the map files will be downloaded to your PC and then checked before they are copied over to your sat nav by the management program.

  • Thanks. That's reassuring. :)
  • OK, I've got problems.

I plug in into the computer, and I get the sound to indicate it is connected but, when I click get started on the Garmin program, it says "No device found"

Take a look in Device Manager and see if there are any items not properly installed. (Should be shown as a yellow box with a ! in it, or similarly). If anything is like this, right-click on it and select Update Driver Software and select the Search Automatically option.

If that doesn't work, insert your Garmin CD (if you have one) select the Browse option ... browse to the Garmin CD and see if this way installs the required drivers.
  • I think I've gone adrift.

I think "Get Started" may be a one time thing, for registering the Sat Nav.

My problem is, when I first installed it, it said there was a 2.8GB map update available, which it offered to download and install.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a big enough data allowance, so I didn't install it.

Now, I've got enough data allowance, but I don't know how to trigger the update.

I can't access my pc with garmin on it at the mo but I think if you run Garmin Express that should work or there is also a WebUpdater there too in the Garmin Folder

    Still struggling.

I go into "settings" on Garmin Express, and select "Anytime" under Update Schedules, then click OK.

Trouble is, when I click "settings" again, "Anytime" is no longer selected

Also, although I get the Windows connection noise, when I plug in the Sat Nav, Garmin Express doesn't seen to recognise it.
  • I've managed the update.

Don't know if it was uninstalling and reinstalling Garmin Express, or turning the Sat Nav face down, that did it, but it identified it, and I was able to install a map update and a voice update.

Total time to update, ~ 1 hour.

Can't say the voice sounds any different
  • I've just tried it on a short run, and there is a slight change to the voice.

When I first bought the unit, the voice couldn't say "street", but said "reet" instead, as in "York reet".

It can now say "street" properly. :)
