Changing "perceived file type" in registry - Media Center won't show pictures

Anyone know how to edit the registry to change a 'perceived file type'?

My problem is that Vista and the built-in Media Center won't display pictures, most are in jpeg format with sample folder containing jpeg and bmp. When I click the file in media centre I get a message stating "unable to display picture".

Apparently this is because the media centre program doesn't 'see' the pictures due to a gremlin in the registry - this is what apparently needs to be changed.

It's a long shot but if anyone knows how to sort this it'd be a help. I tried Microsoft's site which kicked up this article that sadly hasn't helped.

Cheers

So the Microsoft workaround didn't work?

If you want to check the perceived file type, look at the PerceivedType setting in:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg
    etc.

These should have PerceivedType value of image.

Backup the registry before you edit it - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Unfortunately not, I tried Microsoft who wanted £40 + VAT to even listen.

.bmp and .jpeg are both perceived as 'image' already, but no trace of .jpg in that list; closest match was '.jpe' which was perceived as image
