I'm quite happy to pay a small fee to small/local businesses however I agree it should be clearly shown if and what they charge. All that glitters is not gold.0

I doubt neither would have been happy if I'd turned around and walked out.
They might not have been happy but neither of those goods were yours until after payment, so the risk is the retailers if they want to make these additions.Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

Of course they would not as you had contracted to buy the goods. The payment terms do not allow you to do that.glider3560 wrote: »Recent examples include a pub which told me there was a 75p charge after pouring my pint and a takeaway who said there was a 60p charge on collecting my cooked food.

They had contracted to buy the goods at the price on the wall, unless there was a prominent sign stating the card surcharge I believe they had the right to void the contract.Of course they would not as you had contracted to buy the goods. The payment terms do not allow you to do that.0 -
The 80p (or whatever chosen to be charged) is rather a simplistic view.
When you pay by card the small merchant may have to rent the terminal from their bank at £xx.xx per month, they may have to pay for another phone/broadband line, and the cost of thermal rolls which could be as much as £9.00 for 8 rolls from places such as Booker. The man without a signature.0 -
But if I had contracted at the price of the drinks/food and payment terms on the basis of paying by card (as displayed by the Mastercard and Visa logos in the door), there is no term in the "contract" specifying a surcharge for using the advertised payment method.Of course they would not as you had contracted to buy the goods. The payment terms do not allow you to do that.0 -

It's all the add on charges and monthly fees that kill it for us little guys, so card payment actually cost around 10%
The banks have long used small businesses as cash cows sadly."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

It really does "depend".0 -
I don't like unannounced surcharges, and it puts me off buying things at places.
However, the government charge £2.50 for paying your road tax (or is it TV licence - one of those, anyway) by CC, so apparently they think it's OK.0
