  • Not the most exciting of updates. Mr F is working this weekend so I'm cathing up on the housework and aiming for a low spend. Friday saw the big shop for the month (got in at 8 am before it got busy thankfully). I batch cooked a beef stew- came out quite well and two decent portions to the freezer. Roast chicken for dinner last night and today and some venison to do another casserole on Monday.

Having deep cleaned the kitchen and got rid of all the notes that end up stuck to the freezer I went back to an old habit. when I was a DFW I used to put the total on a post it note stuck to the fridge. That way I saw it regularly and it kept me motivated to get it to 0. So I decided to do the same with the savings total. Mr F is impressed with how much we've managed to date. I think he's starting to see how this MSE lark pays off :rotfl:

    Time for an update...

Well, its been an eventful couple of months. Mum had a bit a health scare while we were visiting and that prompted us to bring our time scale forward. So, I have a new job in Scotland and will be moving in September!

It may take Mr F a while to find something and I'll be taking a bit of a salary drop but rents are cheaper so we should be okay but savings may slow down for a bit.

    Current total is £11,299.19.

Congratulations on the new job and hope the move works out for you x

What a year you've had with OH's scare as well, hope things get a bit less hectic.
  • Thanks, guys :)

It has been a tricky few months but I think events have helped us put things in perspective and decide what we really want out of life. namely, to be closer to friends and family and have a decent work life balance.

The routine of work is very good for Mr F but does have to be balanced against the stress. We're considering him looking for a part time job but we'll see what's available.

Having the savings cushion has been fantastic- just knowing I can drop everything for a few months if I really need to is a big comfort. So we want to maintain a decent emergency fund as well as deposit.

Also need to look at investing more for retiring one day. I had the forms on my desk for increasing pension contributions but I'm putting that on hold until we've moved and settled.

On the plus side, cheaper properties mean a lower mortgage with more scope to overpay and save.

Hope the move and job goes well.

Speaking from experience, you could look into property auctions, you might just grab a bargain, although you have to be prepared to either do or get some work done.:)
