Sennheiser 280: closed design, same price as 595. Open vs closed. I think the former will be more comfortable and I'm not planning on using in a noisey environment.

The 280's are nice, but not really for home listening. Quite bassy, almost too much, designed more the the DJ type of listener I guess. I'll be getting a pair of SR60's once my 280's die (they're on their way out). I've read the SR60's are much more suited to home listening.

Yes, I looked the Sennheiser website and the 280's are in the studio section whereas the 555's and 595's are in the high end hi fi section.

I've just borrowed a pair of EH2270s from someone at work. They look very similar to these

I'm impressed by the comfort and the low frequency response.

    Hi,

I've had quite a few sets of Sennheisers - all are pretty good sound quality for the price, but some more comfortable for my head and ears than others. If you can, I'd recommend going to a shop and try them on - places like the apple shop in birmingham bullring have lots to try out their ipods, including Sennheisers. You can always try them there, and find the best price online to buy.

I'm going to try a pair of 595s.
I've been equally impressed and underwhelmed by the 270s. I think the underwhelming is that really they are just a pair of headphones. Good ones, for sure, but they don't turn music into something that it never was.

I've finally taken delivery of a new pair of 595's from Amazon and I love them.
Before that I bought a pair from an Amazon trader, but they had to be sent back because the sound wasn't properly balanced. I had a refund on them.

    Just a quite update.
I've been using my Sennheiser 595s for about 6 months now and think that they were well worth the money (£90 on Amazon). They are very comfortable and the sound is what you'd expect from a audio reference headphone with a RRP of £150.

Two pieces of advice Tom. Consider a decent dedicated headphone amp. It can make a significant improvement in sound as the headphone stages on most CD players and amps are a bit of an afterthought. (If you are handy, you can build a simple Cmoy for not very much money, which is a very good starter amp and much better than many commercial efforts). And don't visit Head-Fi if you want to hang on to your wallet.
