Currently the electricity is a card meter and supplier is Scottish Power, and the gas is Britsh Gas.

I think I would like to change them both to Extra Energy. Is this a good idea and how would I go about getting the card meter changed to a normal meter?

The boiler is a Baxi and is quite old (80s/90s)

Firstly you'll need to setup an account with the existing supplier. Phone them up an ask them to come and reset the meter and send you a new card. If you can't get a new card in time you can take your meter number to some PayPoint shops and get a new one.
Some suppliers will charge to remove a prepayment meter, so make sure you find one that doesn't and phone them up to switch and they will sort out changing the meter for you.

Thanks, so when I set up an account with Scottish Power I can still change from them in a week or three's time with no charge?

What do I do about the Gas? Can I leave it just now and change at the same time as the electric?

Yes if you setup a standard tariff .

I just phoned Scottish power and they said I can still switch if I take one of the other tarrifs just now which is cheaper.

They were asking if I wanted to use them for the gas as well, I said no but maybe it would have been easier.

    Is the gas prepayment too?

Easiest just to set up an account with the current provider and then switch them both to your new supplier.

No gas was done by direct debit by the last owner.
