New passport photo faint

I lost my passport (that I renewed in 2011) via the fast track 1 week service. I've just received my new passport, and the photo seems very faint, and quite grey (the actual photograph on the photo page, not the one on the opposite side of that page).

I looked at the original photograph I gave them, and it's clearer than the one that is printed on my passport.

I phoned them, and they said all passports are checked before posting and it should be fine.

Are the photographs meant to be fainter, or have I just drawn the short straw? Don't want to get to the US immigration and find there's problems...

The actual photo you send in isnt used on the passport (they used to be) so it will be different.

your new passport is fine, don't worry. I also had my passport renewed this year, and the photo inside it, in comparison to my previous passports, is more faintly printed. I've used it no problem at all :).

I could be wrong, but I believe the new photos have been designed to be more easily read by machines as opposed to viewed by a person. It's not some cost-cutting lower quality print as many people (elsewhere) have been claiming!

on a daily basis im suprised at how faint passport pictures have got but the powers that be know what they are doing.

bottom line is its been issued and is therefore a legal travel document

  • Your passport photo I fine. The hologram over the photo makes it look like that. When the passport chip is scanned it shows up clearer. There are passport readers in each passport office if you want to check it yourself
  • I would think they are checked before they are sent back so you should be ok!

The photo in my (2008 issued) passport is very feint.

A comment was made when I passed through an exit check in Switzerland saying lots of British passports are like this. She even showed me her screen and pointed out how clear the photo stored on the chip was compared to the printed version. No idea why she was pointing this out to me .... I can only guess she was bored.
