agree this is part of the total price so irrelevant how it is divided up - if it was not called "carrier surcharge" it would just be part of the fare
The pain point is when you are redeeming miles where you still pay "taxes and fees" this means that many redemptions appear very poor value0 -
Yes, they can change the name, but when you dig down, most of it is still Fuel Surcharge. I've just done some dummy bookings on a few of the legacy airlines . With a bit of digging you can track down YQ (or YR in the case of CX) as being primarily Fuel Surcharge
Agree that no airline will cut a fare if they don't have to, but with ever increasing competition from the LCCs and the ME especially, I think UK airfares will continue to be pressured downwards.
Cathy Pacific - Carrier-imposed surcharge (YR). It is not a fuel surcharge. You can't nonchalantly dismiss the change in name! It is not a fuel surcharge so does not have to closely follow the cost of fuel.
LCC competition doesn't appear to be increasing that much - the days of rapid growth are over. People continually cite the ME airlines as competition but again, they've been around for years and years now. A small decrease wouldn't shock me but I won't be holding my breath for anything significant.0 -

I didn't change anything from what Cathay Pacific call it. They even reduced it 2 weeks ago and still called it a Fuel Surcharge.

My mistake - they haven't officially called it a fuel surcharge (I didn't change anything from how they've filed it on the ticketing systems either) but you're completely right, their website describes it as such.0
