Beware courier company restricted items lists!

Following on from this week’s Yodel problems, I wonder how many online sellers are aware that most of what they send is not covered for compensation and they take ALL the risks themselves? Most private sellers and small businesses who do not qualify for an account with the big companies use a booking agent like Parcel2Go or Interparcel, where you have a vast array of services at different price levels to choose from.
Having had a parcel damaged by UPS (unusual as they have their soft handle policy) I thought as it was not china and glass it would be recoverable but I was wrong. Although UPS themselves don't have many restricted items, as booking agents Interparcel override that with their own list and to be honest as an eBay seller it leaves me cold, especially as I paid them an extra 2% in insurance to cover the item to its value of £122. It makes very interesting reading........

They are mostly sensible but there are some that will catch people out. Jewellery and watches are restricted by most couriers. A few years back I sold wholesale watches and wasn't covered. When a courier company had a driver admit throwing the box over a fence near the delivery address I was told my claim wouldn't stand. I managed to get them to cough up, eventually. There isn't a value limit either, it was just watched that were prohibited.

If you do put a claim in the courier company will try and wriggle out of it. Whether it's worth checking the small print is another matter. If it's a one off parcel most people will take a chance. If you're in business harvesting kidneys you might want to check the small print before signing up to have Yodel deliver them to the recipient;)

OP - the list is available on the respective websites for all to see, repeating it does not help much. What exactly did you send that was not covered?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Glad to see you're not allowed to send "Filth".
  • Seems mostly fair to me, I'd do the same if I was a courier.

Packaging is always a bit of a nightmare, and can be expensive to do properly.

Cutting corners is going to happen, and does, why should a courier cough up for vast level of inept packaging.
  • You've been mis-sold your insurance it would seem, given you have to tell Interparcel what you're sending?

You could ask the ombudsman to investigate?
    "Love you Dave Brooker! x"

"i sent a letter headded sales of god act 1979"
  • OP - what was it you sent?

We assume you failed to read the T&C's of the courier company and you now have a damaged item..

I pack to a very high standard and send fragile items all over the world. If they need a little more care taken I veer towards UPS as they have a soft handle policy and it is only in transit overnight. The item in question was a resin pirate ship that was in bubble wrap, foam chips and double boxed according to their guidelines. So if they then break it, yes they should cough up as it was in no way my fault. It was smashed to bits so must have been given a heck of a whack. When I entered what it was on the booking no warning flashed up and I also paid extra to insure it to £150 which it now seems was a waste of money. I still haven't had a claim form after 6 days.

From your own, original post under "Restricted Items that are sent at own risk" is:
    Glass / Mirrored items / Crystal / Ceramic / Pottery/ Porcelaine/ Plaster / Marble / China / Stone / Slate / Resin / Granite / Concrete - (or any item containing these materials)

So, you sent something that is on their restricted list. It got damaged.

It was made of resin and packed to the max. And although I use courier services regularly the list has definitely grown recently and they cover very little at all. I don't think many people realise the extent of the restrictions so I disagree........ putting it on here too just might help someone, especially if they are new to online selling.

The only reason I can see for interparcel making their own extremely long list is to swerve the paperwork involved in claims. With all the new rules and buyer favouritism on eBay now I for one am looking for a change of direction and this is a big factor in that decision.

I hadn't realised it was on the list until after the event and it used to be that a warning message flagged up when you entered the item into the box.

The thing that is annoying is that UPS would pay for the breakage as the carrier but interparcel are overriding that.
