folks.
this evening my macbook air started showing the white screen of death.
On start up the white screen comes on and the "bonging" start up noise and the load up get no further however the "bonging" keeps going off every few seconds
Having trawled around the net i have tried
cmd+r for recovery
pressing and holding down the power key and then restarting
frowning and swearing at it
offering it a nibble of my double decker
pleading with it
but all to no avail all i get is a white screen and a "bonging" noise.
Im well out of warranty and thus far all of the solutions to the problem seem to revolve around getting into recovery mode.
so does anyone have any suggestions as i really love my mac and have got lots of things on there i know i should have backed up and havent quite got round to it.
thanks in advance.

Sounds like the hard drive has failed. Can you boot a USB/CD version of Linux and check?0

The "bonging" suggests memory failure. If it's removable, you can replace it. However, I suspect that it's soldered in and so a new motherboard will be required.
Warranty or not, if it's less than 5 years old, get onto Apple and quote the Sale of Goods Act. They should repair or replace it at a reasonable price - taking into account the use you've already had from it.
Assuming a cost when new of £900 then dividing by 5 gets £180. Therefore, (for example) if you've had it for 2 years, I'd expect to pay 2 x £180 as a reasonable price to get it repaired/replaced.0 -

Is this a joke? This is apple we are talking about after all and the term reasonable and apple don't really go hand in hand.0 -
Have friends with a 2009 imac, the had this problem. It was the hard drive. They took it to an apple tech centre, they diagnosed the problem and offered to replace the disk for free.
Both he and I were surprised by this service.0 -

It keeps doing the startup noise? Is the power button stuck down or did liquid get into it somehow? If there's an error it would usually stop, rather than constantly restart.0
