EON Overpayment

After getting my half year energy bill from eon I found I was £346 in credit, so I called them and requested the money back and they duly obliged, the money landed in my bank account a few days later.

A few days after this another payment of £346 arrived in my account from eon, so they've refunded me twice. Now morally I know it would be wrong to keep the money given to me by the big bad energy company, but legally where so I stand about keeping it or notifying them of their error?

  • It doesn't belong to you. If eon realise they have every right to take action to to retrieve it.

Also you have posted on here where the EON Reps can see your post .

A simple matter to contact the IT department with a customised search that will reveal your overpayment .

If you ever consider being devious again take my tip and stay quiet and do not post your situation on public forums !

If eon can work out who I am from a post on an internet forum then they deserve every penny back

It would (or should) be fairly easy for them to do so. You have stated how much your refund was and that you received this amount twice in the space of a few days. Would not be too hard to search and find these amounts in their list of refunds made and from that you would be easily identifiable.
  • Regardless of whether they'd have picked up on it through this forum they will no doubt pick up on it and merely ask you for it back. If you are funny about it they will probably just levy it as a charge on the account.

Best bet to give them a ring and offer it back. They may even offer you a small GWG for your honesty/the inconvenience.

No wonder people are put off from contributing to this site when threads descend into personal abuse.
  • Chances are that it would have been debited twice from your Eon account anyway so when you get your next bill you'll be in debit by however much has been over refunded, so you might as well just pay it back now...

Completely correct. Assuming that EON use an accounting set up like all suppliers should do, all payments into your account go on as credits and all payments out go on as debits.

Your next bill will just show the two refunds as debits under payments and adjustments, and your bill will be exactly £346 higher at that point.

Reason for this happening is usually a refund sent due to it being your DD annual review date, and any credit balance over £5.00 is sent to you automatically, and it would just be bad timing that you called before it cleared to have it sent manually as well. Granted the person you spoke to probably should have checked this.

    Hi drbesty

As above, I suspect the advisor you spoke to didn't check a refund was already in the system before sending another manually. Sorry about this.

CompletelyLost and Ivf are spot on. The two refunds will show on your account as debits and will probably leave the account in arrears. If you've registered with our website, you'll be able to see this there.

As it looks like you've a Monthly Direct Debit, the arrears will be taken into consideration when setting future payments. At some point, this will lead to an increase in your monthly payments. To avoid this, you'll need to return the overpayment.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction drbesty.
