What Credit Card for my situation?

Hi

Going to upgrade my car and would rather put the difference on an interest free credit card than take a chunk out of my ISA.

I have a £1200 Nationwide CC which charges interest now (had it 18 months) and a £500 HSBC one that came with my student account and has stayed now it's a graduate account. I earn 23K and have been on that since September when I started grad job. My Experian is 'good' at 958, no negative factors I think I've just not had masses of credit for it to be higher.

Has anyone got any idea what a realistic limit might be, and who is more likely to say yes to someone like me?

I do intend to get rid of my HSBC one but when I was a student it was automatic with the account and they refused to remove it. I've been keeping Nationwide for emergency vet bills, £500 doesn't go far..!

Thanks to anyone who can help :)

When the interest rates are miserable and the yearly allowance is £15K there is no much point in holding on to your ISA unless you really can get an absolutely free credit.

Most likely the dealer will charge you for a CC payment. A card that offers money transfers to a current account will charge 2.69%+ for such transfer either - more than your ISA annual rate is.

Franchise won't charge me. They will quite happily bung X amount on a CC free of charge and the rest take as trade in value. ISA is the Nationwide one they stopped doing in summer, don't want anything out of that right now because it was the best I could find.

I want a new CC regardless of whether I use it for a car or not. Just unsure who to approach and how much is realistic. I'd like something more like 2K and to then get rid of my other two. Daren't lose the £1200 one before getting a new one due to vets though.

See Spending 0% Cards then and try 'eligibility checker' in the article. It's impossible to guess the limit, but every little helps.

They'll only refuse to remove it when there's an outstanding balance otherwise you can cancel no matter what.
  • It appears you have changed your original question from
“wanting an interest free credit card to help purchase a car” to
“I want a new CC regardless of whether I use it for a car or not.”
    after grumblers great answer
