named driver

Have an old runabout which is owned by me and I am the main driver with OH as named driver. I am the main driver of this car as it works out cheaper that way.
OH has a brand new car and is named as the main driver and I am the named driver.

Because of different cars used for different things etc.. I figure generally we will both be using each car about 50/50. And sometimes that might tip over that the named driver might be using the car a bit more than 50%.

I'm not trying to fiddle anything but want to get the best insurance costs for the circumstances. Just making sure this can't be seen as fronting or dodgy in any way.

Thanks.

Who is your policy with, I had a similar problem were myself and my daughter were 50/50 on our cars explained this to insurer and they simply changed the policy to shared use on both cars.

I told my insurer that wife and I drive 50/50 but they insisted I declare who was the main driver, even though in reality it is neither. Guess 50/50 didn't fit their script so I had to pick one of us.

Named driver isn't always covered for commuting to work on some policies too!!

So, if I understand correctly it depends on the insurers, some accept the named driver scenario and some a shared-driver scenario (hadn't heard of this before).
I just may have to call the current insurer to see what they think is best and hopefully it is not more expensive.

I am not sure that there is any real definition of 'main driver'. For example our big family car is registered to my wife. She drives it every day but I drive when we go on holiday. She probably is in the drivers seat for more hours but I do more miles. If you ask insurance companies they don't know. They just have boxes to tick.

I doubt it makes much difference if both drivers are of a similar risk in terms of age, experience, claims history, etc. Fronting is about hiding the fact that the main driver is of significantly greater risk but hasn't paid the premium to reflect that. Probably best to get the insurers agreement though to avoid any problems later on.
