Tax Credit Overpayment

Ok, second post and I'm asking for more help!! :rotfl:

According to the tax office my better half owes them $500 from overpayments. Cant understand this at all.

2003-2004 she earned $6382

2004-2005 she earned $6305

So actually earned about $80 less, how come she owes them money?

Many thanks.

Could it be that she was overpaid her TCs in 2003/2004 and now they want that overpayment back?

You could phone them up and ask, but that is usually a nightmare in my experience! It's a bit like :wall:

Tell her to get the form that they sent her with all the information on it (ie her income, what has been paid to her so far, and what they claim to have overpaid) and ring the helpline.

In my experience, they do try to help. If it is not her fault that they have overpaid her, they will send a form to fill in which means that she will not have to repay the money - but only if it is not her fault.

Do you live together? It could be to do with your joint incomes.

I would ring them and find out what is going on.

They will ask you to write in normally to dispute it but dont hold your breath!! I had a letter back in August 2004 stating I had been overpaid - I queried why is it after only 2 months prior it had been for a manual assesment. Only this morning, yes this morning (8 months later) have I got a letter saying the error was theirs and they would cancel the overpayment
