I have a Shar pei who has been through hell in terms of allergies. We aren't completely free of it but the following has helped greatly.

Get the skin free from infection - long dose of antibiotics
Use medicated wash - malaseb every other day for 10 days when bad
Supplement diet with probiotics - natural yogurt
Get omega 3 fatty acids into the diet - salmon oil is great
Find a totally GRAIN FREE wet or dry food - wainwrights Turkey and veg and there are other varieties available.

We found out that nala was allergic to beef, pork, lamb, white fish, dust and storage mites etc etc

Switching to a salmon based grain free diet may work wonders for your dog

Let me know how you get on

My boy got repeated diarrhoea, it was terrible, which I know isn't the same, but still caused by allergies/intolerances. My vet said the same, maize and wheat was the likely cause, so cut it out. We switched to James Wellbeloved dry, mixing some meat in for flavour as he won't eat dry alone either.

Still he was poorly quite often. Someone suggested going totally grain free, so I got Wainwrights Grain Free Turkey from Pets at Home (usually £36.99 but often on offer at £30 for 10kg). And since then, he's not had any more flare ups, and he's like a different dog. It seems rice, corn, wheat, maize, gluten beef, and lamb were all causing him bother.

Could your boy be allergic to rice too? Maybe try completely grain free food, perhaps with some egg or yoghurt for flavour?

This is their range, they do all grain free wet trays as well...

  • Apologies for digging up an old thread, but thought it might be useful for anyone considering immunotherapy for their pets. As the OP mentioned the vet had recommended it.

I've written a fairly detailed post about our experience using it with our Doberman. Not sure if it's of any use to anyone but thought I'd share.
