I'd offer 50% discount if they truly are staying away for a few weeks, ie lock up the room and turn off the heating and enjoy having the place to yourself for a few weeks.
If they want to come and go during that period I would say no.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

For Monday-Friday lodgers I'd only charge when they were in residence.

this is a moral question and only you can decide how you want to behave, whether others make a Xmas present of a rent holiday, or charge by the day so do not charge when not there, or do not charge for major breaks (Xmas, Easter) should not have any impact on how you want to behave yourself

good lodgers are hard to find, a little xmas spirit (if your finances can cope) would not go unnoticed and it will allow them to spend more on your prezzy :)

Yeah this exactly. My last lodger lived here so he paid monthly whether he was here or on holiday/working away.

My current lodger pays weekly as is a contractor at the local ship yard and is only really here from Monday night to Friday morning. He doesn't get living allowance while he's not working so he can't afford to pay while he's not here working. He has however as mentioned above, asked me if I'd be happy to keep the room for him if he pays me a nominal £25 a week while he's home over the christmas.

I'm better off doing that as realistically I'd not fill the room so close to Christmas, plus he's a nice guy who I get on with. I don't need the money so no harm done.

This is a totally different issue to not charging a lodger while they're away from your home over the christmas holidays.
  • I'm a part-time lodger - Mon-Weds nights, and I'd expect to carry on paying for the Christmas period, as I do when I'm away on holiday. Its not my landlady's fault that Christmas, or my holidays, are happening... However, I do get a bit of a trade off - very, very occasionally I need to stay over on a Thursday, and although I always ask if that's ok (and she always says yes), I'd never expect to pay extra for that night. So, if either of them ever need to stay over for an extra night, perhaps you could make it clear that you wouldn't charge them extra because you charged them over Christmas??

It might be to you, but the to the OP, it's something they're not sure about, hence their original question. My point of view is implied in my question - you can have a different one, that's fine, but it's not a different issue at all. The rooms are there, and unless they're fully emptied, can't be used for anything else for the duration. The mortgage needs to be paid. Were I the lodger, I'd expect to pay. If I got a bit of a break in the form of a reduction for non-occupancy, I'd be delighted. It certainly didn't happen for either of my kids when they were students. They had to pay for their lodgings from August till July. End of discussion as far as their landlords were concerned.
