I bought lots of used games cheaply from Game and Amazon, for my grandchildren to play when here.

They haven't tried them all, but ones they like (they are boys aged 9, 8 and 5) or ones I think girls will like are

Eledees (collect little creatures to make power)

The Dog Island (adventure where a little dog interacts with others on a dog island)

Wall (based on the film and involves collecting and shooting)

Epic Mickey (collect, interact shoot etc and award winner)

Raving Rabbids Party (good value as three game compilation for the price of one)

Rabbids Go Home (they all love this collect and run game)

Smooth Moves (only the 9 year old and his mum have played this but it is fun for one or more ,involving doing intuitive actions with the remote;swatting flies, putting up an umbrella, cleaning a window)

I think most if not all of those are Wii games rather than Wii-U though?

Wii games will play on a WiiU, but not the other way round.
  • I have had a WiiU since launch, I would recommend New Super Mario Bros U you can also get the Super Luigi DLC for it, Mario 3D, Zelda HD and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker has just released.

I also advise you to connect up the console before Xmas as there will be updates for the console, this will save time and hassle on Xmas morning.

Yes I realise that but the OP said they already had a Wii and were looking for Wii U games.

Good thinking - the updates take a while anyway and I suspect will take far longer on Christmas Day when there's a lot of new Wii U owners trying to update their consoles.

I don't think that'll be an issue, something tells me that Nintendo's servers will easily cope with demand - according to figures they're tracking at less than 300k units in Europe in the last 3 months. To put it into context, in December alone PS4 has shifted 357k & Xbox One around 157k.

They say that they have PS3, not a Wii.
