During thunderstorm a couple of nights ago, we were awakened by a loud bang and flash from our living room, and when we got up to investigate, there was a strong burning smell, and smoke coming from our tv satellite receiver, this and our broadband router were both damaged, and no longer working.
My question is: shouldn't Openreach have installed some kind of surge protection on the line when it was installed?
This could easily have caused a fire.

It's up to you to fit additional surge protection if required , not Openreach or any other provider. Openreach are not responsible for your Satellite installation at all.0

Was your satellite receiver plugged in to the telephone line?
If not, that would indicate the surge came down the mains instead (which is probably most likely).Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it0 -
