death certificates

Options
Evening All,

Our parents died about 40 years ago, I need to put a memorial stone at the church in their village where they lived.

I was going to order from an online company a stone to be made and they install stone.

I have parents birth certificates, not death certificates so don't know exact date of death.

I tried the local registrar but they cannot trace parents death certificates.

My question is do I need a death certificate to carry this out ?
I know I have to get in touch of the local reverend.

I think I can find there death date from the family, maybe.

    That's such a lovely idea.
I find it very strange the local register can't trace your parents but I'm sure there is a central office you can contact.. sorry I haven't got the details. Maybe the church could help you as they should have a record of they had the services there.

Freebmd will allow you to search for your parents deaths for free

    http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

You just need the district , page and volume that it shows to order a copy from the gro

If you cannot find them on freebmd (I have previously failed to find some records) pm Me the details and I will have a look on a site I subscribe to, alternatively many libraries offer free access to Ancestry

Either way you will need forename, surname and district the death was registered in

Let us know how you get on

    Good luck

If your parents died just over the border, then the records will be there. e.g. if they were on holiday when they passed, or the hospital is your local one, but over the border. You/they know you live in a county, but you might go over the border without even thinking about it.

There is a central register, which others have mentioned above, where you can find/check.

Each county has its own online searchable database too... if you say which county you're in, or your parents died in, or might have died in, somebody might be able to take you straight to it. e.g. in Cambridgeshire it's at camdex.org

    IoW has http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/bmd_1/deaths/bmd_d_search.htm
  • Ok, so people seem to have inside information or are people all just guessing?

Where was the death registered? Which country did they die in?

Assuming they were in England/ Wales then you can buy the certificate from https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/app_select.asp and dont need any page reference or such to get it as they will search for you though the more accurate you can be the better the chances of them finding it. Have done a fair amount of family history searching and never had problems with them not finding certs.

The church will tell you if they need a certificate, I personally would doubt that they do. Obv if you dont know their date of death then you may be more limited on what you can have put on the stone.
  • I have a sub to Ancestry if you want to message me their names and place of death I will see what I can find on there for you.
  • Thank you very much, I will try some of your suggestions, I will keep you updated.
Maybe we should have done this many years ago, but I didn't need a memorial stone to remember mum and dad as they will always be in my head.
I/we are doing this for future family members if they wish to follow the family tree also I am getting longer in the tooth day by day.

Thank you once again for your help, advice, and useful information.

    Great site as usual.

Whoppie Friday evening lets have a drink!!!

Was the funeral service for each of them held at the church? If it was the church will have details of DoD and you can then order copy death certificates from https://www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Why are you putting a memorial stone down 40 years later?
