Re-done Nationwide credit application but this time got declined?

When I first did a nationwide credit card application I got accepted subjected to ID, since there was an issue with my surname (letter being different) my passport did not go through, so I cancelled the application and did it again..Now this time I only got £1000 quote...And therefore was declined...I re-applied using the same name but with a different letter, they changed my name in the branch few weeks ago to.o...Am wondering why I got declined this time? it said something about credit score being low...

If I was not on the electoral roll would it have said that? do they say you have a low score if your not on the electoral register?

Why it did not go through this time I dont know...I was led to believe any name change by a letter should not make a different outcme of credit card application.

Not being on the electoral roll is generally considered a fairly big negative by potential lenders.

But the decision to accept or decline is based them assessing the whole of your information and circumstances. So it is unlikely to be any one thing causing the decline and more likely a combination of things.

  • But I got accepted last time few weeks ago. Like I said this time I had to change a word of my surname, still everything else such as d.o.b and address are same.. So why it got declined this time I dont know.

I checked 192 and I am on the electoral roll..But there is a slight issue with that, my national insurance number matches the name I had previous to my name change, thats the name I got accepted by Nationwide previously, so I dont know if national insurance number has anything to do with credit card applications and files? it seems am on the electoral roll as the name prior to my name change and which is matched with my national insurance number...

How do nationwide decide the quote figure? if I got £1000 and not £500 does that mean my credit score cannot be that low? surely if it was electoral roll issue I would not get a 1k quote?
  • Are you on the electoral roll under your new surname? if not, then there's your problem.

Your national insurance has nothing to do with it, but you should contact HMRC to check they have the correct details for you too.

Being quoted £1000 can still mean it's low. As far as credit goes, £1000 is not a lot.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

Their lending criteria may have changed since a few weeks ago. Or they may have filled their targets of new applicants at your risk level for this month.

Have you looked at your credit files with any/all of the 3 credit reference agencies. What matters is that they show you being on the electoral roll. The NI number is not relevant for a credit application.

It is based on the information your provide to them and what they see on your credit files, from this they assess both how high a risk they think your are and also how they perceive your affordability.

Am checking my files in due course!

I know I did not take any credit the last 15 years, and if Capital One accepted me then file must have been somewhat decent..C1 have me down as my present name, so am assuming on the electoral roll, not sure. I did not know having one credit card will be enough for my own bank Nationwide to decline me a CC, espeacially after being accepted just few weeks ago.

On 192 it has me down as my present name (name change).

I asked about national insurance number because my local council asked for it, and I called in HRC and they said my NI is under my previous name, which tells me maybe I was on the electoral roll as my previous name?

about quote, I assumed for Nationwide to quote me a figure they would know am on the electoral roll? they didnt quote low figure such as £500 but £1000, so am thinking if am not on the ER at all then it wouldn't have gone past that figure...

p.s by the way do Nationwide soft checks check if your on the electoral roll? or does that come after ID check?

The soft check will include checking if your credit file shows you as being on the electoral roll.

Likely all nationwide will see currently is that a potential lender did a credit application search on your file. In the 2-3 weeks following that search, and before the account is added to your credit file for all they know you may have taken out say a £10k loan.
